Ultra-Waterproof Fabric: To protect from rain or moisture, we often resort to waterproof clothes, but after some time they lose their properties. Now scientists have prepared a new cloth which keeps water away even after prolonged use and wear.
What is the special thing about this new discovery?
A team of scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences has developed this special fabric. This technology, developed under the leadership of Professor Dong Zichao, has been made superhydrophobic i.e. extremely water repellent. This research has been published in Nature Communications in which a new technology named MARS (Molecularly Assembled Robust Superhydrophobic Shell) is mentioned.
How does this technology work?
Usually, waterproof clothes have a coating on top which starts removing with time. But in this new technology, a strong protective layer is made on each fiber separately. This provides uniform protection to every part of the cloth and water droplets slide off instead of sticking to it.
Problem with old waterproof clothes
Most of the waterproof fabrics available till now lose their ability after repeated washing, rubbing or use. Apart from this, fluorochemicals are used in many clothes which are considered harmful for the environment. Some technologies depend on expensive and harmful chemicals, which makes their use on a large scale difficult.
Excellent performance even in difficult conditions
This new cloth was put through many difficult tests. It did not allow water to enter inside even after thousands of times of rubbing, pulling and heavy rain. This fabric retains its properties even after daily activities like walking, running or rubbing with bags.
Effective even in extremely hot and cold weather
Another great feature of this fabric is that it works even in very high temperatures. It was able to keep water away even in heat up to 160 degrees Celsius and extreme cold like -196 degrees Celsius.
Often waterproof clothes become heavy or uncomfortable but the fabric made with this new technology remains soft, light and breathable. This means that wearing it will provide comfort as well as safety.
Where will it be used in future?
This new technology can be used in outdoor clothing, safety gear, medical goods and industrial products. With this, clothes can be made which will be durable and environment friendly for a long time. This new ultra-waterproof fabric is being considered a big step in the world of technology. It is not only more durable but also offers a better option from the environment point of view.
