- If the warning stops, there is a possibility of fraud increasing.
TRAI-Truecaller: Spam calls were increasing rapidly in the country due to which TRAI was adopting new methods. Now meanwhile, TRAI and Truecaller have come face to face to curb spell calls. Yes, actually, Truecaller was trying to declare many calls as fake, which also included banking calls. Apart from this, there is another reason for these two to face each other which is whether caller ID apps can warn users by declaring calls coming from 140 and 1600 series as spam or not. Let us know what effect it will have on the users.
what is the whole matter
According to media reports, TRAI wants caller ID apps like Truecaller, Hiya and Whoscall to stop labeling 140 and 1600 series numbers as spam. Actually, TRAI believes that calls coming from these numbers are used only by registered companies, banks and other institutions for marketing or service. That is why they should not be kept in spam category.
On the other hand, Truecaller says that if most of the users are repeatedly complaining about a number or are blocking those numbers, then in such a situation they have every right to give information to the users.
What are TRAI’s rules
According to the information, TRAI had implemented a new system in 2024 under which special number series were decided for different types of business calls. The 140 series is used for promotional or telemarketing calls. Whereas, 1600 series was meant for banking, OTP, transaction and other service calls.
Now after this, TRAI has instructed companies to use these special numbers instead of normal 10 digit mobile numbers so that users can easily identify whether the call has come from a registered organization.
What did Truecaller say on TRAI’s proposal?
Wondering why spam calls have increased SIGNIFICANTLY in India recently? Well, it’s actually going to get worse, here’s why:

Let us tell you that Truecaller CEO Rishit Jhunjhunwala has criticized TRAI’s proposal. He says that the company helps protect crores of Indians every day from spam and fraudulent calls. In such a situation, if the apps are stopped from warning the users, then it will have a direct impact on the users and fraudsters can also take advantage of this system, due to which the cases of fraud with the people can increase.
What will be the impact on users?
Let us tell you that the direct impact of this controversy can be seen on crores of Indian mobile users. If caller ID apps do not get permission to show warnings, then it will be difficult to identify whether these calls are from a registered company or from a fraudster. However, a final decision on this is yet to come from the government.
