Users use Face ID to keep them safe so that no one can access them. FaceID is considered a more secure method, but a new report has raised concerns. It has been told that Face ID on Android phones can be tricked with the help of photos. Android devices with FaceID can be unlocked by showing a photo instead of the real user’s face. This raises many questions regarding the security of the device.
This claim was made regarding Android Face ID
According to a report by The Times, FaceID protection of about 133 devices can be bypassed through photographs. The most expensive phones of Samsung, Motorola and Oppo are also included in this list. The report claims that even premium models like Samsung Galaxy S25, Oppo Find X9 Pro and Motorola Razr 50 Ultra could not pass the test. Apart from these, devices of companies like Honor, HMD, Nokia, Nothing, OnePlus, Realme, Vivo and Xiaomi also could not pass the test. These devices can be unlocked by printing them on paper or showing a photo on another screen and this does not require the face of the real user.
Why did this problem arise?
According to the report, this problem has arisen due to the facial recognition system used in these devices. Most of these devices use a basic 2D system, which compares the photo taken from the front camera with the photo saved in the setup. In such a situation, if there is similarity between these two photos then most of the devices will be unlocked. This is what gives rise to anxiety. If someone has your photo then he can unlock your Android phone by showing it.
What is the way to prevent this?
Many companies including Apple use 3D system to scan FaceID in their devices. In this the phone analyzes the shape and depth of the face. Because of this it becomes very difficult to dodge it. This was the reason why iPhones using 3D mapping, Google Pixel smartphones and Samsung’s latest Galaxy S26 series devices could not be unlocked through photos.
