Iron man emerged from village soil
Vallabhbhai Patel, born on 31 October 1875 in Nadiad, Gujarat, belonged to an ordinary family. Childhood was spent in the village. After completing his studies, he became a successful lawyer. The big turning point in his life came when he came in contact with Mahatma Gandhi. By associating with Mahatma Gandhi, he started raising his voice for the farmers and common people.
He organized farmers’ movements in Kheda, Borsad and Bardoli. These movements were non-violent, but effective. Only after the success of Bardoli Satyagraha, people started calling him “Sardar”.
Big role in the freedom struggle
Sardar Patel became a big leader of the Indian National Congress. He played a big role in strengthening the organization, preparing for elections and connecting people. His speech given at Gowalia Tank Ground in Mumbai during the ‘Quit India Movement’ of 1942 is considered to be inspiring among the people.

Country’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister
The country became independent in 1947. The circumstances were not easy. On one hand there was the pain of partition, on the other hand the problems of refugees and on the third hand the merger of hundreds of princely states into India. At such a time, Sardar Patel was made the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of the country. He carried out relief work for refugees in Punjab and Delhi. 565 princely states united in one thread
At the time of independence, there were about 565 princely states in India, which were not directly under British rule. Merger of these princely states into India was not an easy task. Sardar Patel, along with Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Lord Mountbatten, convinced most of the princely states and included them in India. He also handled complex matters like Hyderabad, Junagadh and Kashmir with strictness and wisdom.
