Whenever the story of India’s space dreams is narrated, the name of Dr. Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai comes first. It was these scientists who laid the foundation of ISRO, which the country is proud of today. But his identity is not only as a great scientist, but also as a person who put work for the country above money.
In the 1960s, India had neither resources nor modern technology. Still, Dr. Vikram Sarabhai dreamed that India would keep pace with the world in space science. In 1962, he played an important role in the establishment of INCOSPAR (Indian National Committee for Space Research). This organization later became ISRO.
He understood that space science is not just for flying rockets but is necessary for the development of the country. Such as weather information, communication system, help in farming, disaster management and access to education. At that time this thinking itself was very advanced.
Decision to take only 1 rupee salary
Dr. Sarabhai belonged to a prosperous family. He had everything. But when it came to the country, he decided to take only Re 1 salary for his post. This was not a rule, but his personal decision. He believed that in the work of serving the country, money has less importance, intentions and hard work are more important.

Dr. Vikram Sarabhai not only created ISRO. He established the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad, which is called the cradle of space science. Apart from this, he played a role in setting up many educational and scientific institutions.

The journey from 1963 to 1971
Dr. Sarabhai took charge of the space program in 1963 and remained engaged in this mission till his death in 1971. During this time, he laid the foundation on which today’s modern ISRO stands. During his time, rocket launching started from Thumba (Kerala), which later became the foundation of major space missions.
Why is he called ‘Father of Indian Space Programme’
He is not called the ‘Father of the Indian Space Program’ for nothing. He assured India that we too can make our mark in space. His thinking was that space technology should be used to improve the lives of common people.
