How Gut Health Affects Skin Health: Many people keep using expensive face washes, creams and skin treatments for years, but pimples, redness, itching or other skin problems come back again and again. Dr Ashwini KC, skin disease expert at Manipal Hospital Kanakapura Road, told TOI that the condition of the skin largely depends on the health of the intestines. He says that trillions of microorganisms present in the intestines can affect inflammation, hormonal imbalance and many skin related problems in the body. This is the reason why doctors are now paying attention to gut health in problems like acne, rosacea, eczema and psoriasis.
Why does the intestine play an important role?
Research published in the US National Library of Medicine has also revealed that the risk of many skin diseases can increase if the balance of bacteria present in the intestines gets disturbed. The group of microorganisms present in the human digestive system is called the gut microbiome. These not only help in digesting food, but also play an important role in strengthening the immune system and maintaining balance in the body. When good bacteria start decreasing and harmful bacteria increase, a condition of gut dysbiosis can arise. Dr. Ashwini KC explains that this imbalance can cause persistent inflammation in the body, which can worsen problems like acne, eczema, rosacea and psoriasis.

Lifestyle also plays an important role
According to medical gastroenterologist Dr. Gajendra R, modern lifestyle is also playing a big role in increasing this problem. Consumption of excessive sugar and processed foods, constant stress, poor sleep and excessive use of antibiotics can harm the good bacteria of the intestines. Its effect gradually becomes visible on the skin also.
How can we get rid of it?
Experts believe that external care alone is not enough for better skin. Fiber-rich fruits and vegetables, whole grains, adequate sleep, stress control and balanced eating can help in improving gut health. According to Dr. Gajendra R, fermented foods like curd, kimchi and kefir promote good bacteria, which can also benefit the skin.
