SIM Binding: The Indian government is considering extending the deadline for the SIM-binding rule being implemented for messaging platforms. Due to technical problems, the companies have asked for additional time, after which the new deadline can now be extended till December 2026.
What are SIM-binding rules?
The government had implemented a new rule in November 2025 under which it was made mandatory for apps like WhatsApp, Telegram and Arattai to link the user's mobile number to the same SIM card present in the phone. This clearly means that if there is no registered SIM in your phone then you will not be able to use that app. The purpose of this step is to prevent fake accounts and cyber fraud, especially in cases where foreign networks are used.
Strictness on web version also
The government had talked about implementing the rules not only on the mobile app but also on the web version. For example, on platforms like WhatsApp Web, users can be logged out every 6 hours. To login again, re-verification will be required so that the security of the account can be further strengthened.
Why may the deadline increase?
According to reports, many companies told the government that implementing this system is not so easy. Due to challenges like technical testing, operating system updates and working on different devices, companies could not implement this rule within the stipulated time. For this reason, the government is now planning to implement it in a phased manner.
Different challenges in Android and iOS
It is being told that this feature will be implemented on Android devices first. At the same time, there are some technical obstacles on the iPhone i.e. iOS platform, work is going on to remove them. Apple and other companies are trying together to streamline this system.
Preparation of WhatsApp and other companies
WhatsApp's parent company Meta is working closely with the government in this direction. Currently, the SIM-binding feature is in beta testing for Android users. At the same time, Indian app Arattai is also preparing to bring necessary updates soon so that it can follow this rule.
Why is this rule necessary?
The government believes that cyber crimes can be controlled to a great extent through SIM-binding. According to reports, the country suffered a loss of more than Rs 22,800 crore due to cyber fraud in the year 2024. In such a situation, linking the KYC-verified SIM directly to the device will strengthen the identity of the account and make it easier to track fraud cases.
What will be the impact on users?
If this rule is fully implemented then users will have to use the same SIM with which the account is created to use their messaging apps. However, increasing the deadline may provide relief to both users and companies.
