Management wanted to drop Rohit Sharma after Afghanistan series.
New Delhi. In the last two days, many things and reports came to light regarding the future of Indian veteran batsman Rohit Sharma. It was said that the selection committee has made up its mind about Rohit Sharma and the third ODI to be played against England at Lord’s on Sunday could prove to be the last match of his international career. However, on this BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia clarified that there is nothing like that. Saikia said in a statement, ‘Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team and will continue to play for the country as long as he is part of the team’s plans. The ODI to be held at Lord’s is not his last match. Amidst all this, a new revelation has come to light that the management had decided to drop Rohit from the team only after the ODI series against Afghanistan.
The selectors have made up their mind
According to the report of Times of India, ‘The selection committee has decided that Rohit Sharma will not be India’s first choice ODI opener after the England series. The team management and selectors have also conveyed their views to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Now it remains to be seen whether the board talks to Rohit Sharma on this issue or the selectors themselves inform him about their decision.
Want to give Yashasvi a long chance
The report has claimed that from the beginning, the team management wanted Yashasvi Jaiswal to play the entire ODI series in England, so that he could get enough experience for the preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, this decision was postponed to give Rohit Sharma another chance. According to sources, ‘The selectors had made up their mind to drop Rohit only after the home ODI series against Afghanistan. Not only this, Rohit even refused to rest in the third ODI played in Chennai. In such a situation, to give a chance to Yashasvi, captain Shubman Gill had to bat at number 3. Virat Kohli was not a part of this series.
Old style not seen after snatching captaincy
Rohit Sharma’s performance has been continuously under question ever since Shubman Gill was made the ODI captain after the Champions Trophy 2025. According to the report, the team management is also not happy with his changed batting attitude. While earlier Rohit was known for his fast starts, now he is batting very cautious and slow. The team management believes that it takes the first two-three matches of any series for Rohit to gain momentum, whereas India now wants to move forward in the direction of preparing the team for the future.

Fitness also became a concern
The report also said that the selectors had already informed BCCI about their concerns regarding the fitness of Rohit Sharma. By the 2027 ODI World Cup, Rohit will be over 40 years of age and the selectors doubt that he will be able to maintain his fitness and form at that level. Rohit has retired from both other international formats and plays very little domestic cricket. In the last Vijay Hazare Trophy season, he played only two matches. The selectors believe that due to playing limited matches it takes more time for them to gain rhythm.
Now all eyes are on Lord’s
At present the final decision is in the hands of BCCI and Rohit Sharma himself. Even though the BCCI Secretary has given clarification on this, but if the report proves to be true then the third ODI to be played against England at Lord’s can become the last chapter of the brilliant international career of Rohit Sharma, one of the most successful captains of Indian cricket.
