New Delhi: Sobers, considered the greatest all-rounder in the history of cricket, died on Friday in Barbados at the age of 89. He was about to celebrate his 90th birthday after 11 days. There is silence in world cricket on the death of Sobers. Former and current players are paying tribute to this legendary all-rounder player.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has said that Sir Garfield Sobers was the greatest cricketer to walk the face of the earth and was everything we dreamed of being as a child picking up a bat or a ball. Gavaskar said:

This is the saddest day for cricket. The greatest cricketer on this earth has left us. No words are enough to describe cricketer Sir Garfield Sobers. When we held a bat or a ball as children, they were what we dreamed of becoming. All the memories are lingering in my mind and will always remain in my heart. God rest your soul, Sir Garfield. You will always be in our hearts.

India’s champion batsman Virat Kohli, who has won the ICC Cricketer of the Year award twice, wrote:

Meanwhile, players in the Lanka Premier League will play with black armbands on Saturday in honor of Sir Sobers. Sri Lanka Cricket said in a statement, ‘To pay tribute to this great son of cricket, Sri Lanka Cricket will observe one minute silence before today’s matches of the Lanka Premier League. Players will play with black bands on their arms in all matches.
