Duryodhana admitted that seeing the increasing prosperity of the Pandavas filled his heart with jealousy and dissatisfaction. Vidur explained that a person who becomes sad after seeing the progress of others can never remain happy. Paying attention to your work and efforts is the path to true success.

Vidur told Dhritarashtra that a ruler who sees only his own profit ultimately loses both the kingdom and his honour. Justice, equality and welfare of the people are the hallmarks of good leadership. A decision taken out of selfishness always leads to trouble.

Vidur repeatedly advised Dhritarashtra to follow the path of religion and morality, but due to attachment and love for his son, he ignored him. The person who ignores beneficial advice and listens only to what he likes, becomes the cause of his own downfall.

Dhritarashtra knew that Vidur was telling the truth, yet his attachment to his son kept him from taking the right decision. When emotions overpower reason, the person loses the distinction between right and wrong. This becomes the cause of big crisis later on.

Vidur told that wealth, glory and power are not permanent. If character, truth and religion are together, even lost property can be recovered, but if character is lost, everything becomes meaningless. Respect always comes from virtue.

Duryodhana’s ego took him away from every proper advice. He was not ready to listen to anyone before his wishes. Vidur explained that anger and ego destroy man’s intelligence and open the way to destruction.

Vidur clearly said that success achieved through unrighteousness, deceit and injustice does not last long. A person who follows truth, patience, ethics and religion ultimately achieves respect and victory. This is also the biggest message of Mahabharata.
