Wi-Fi in Airplane: In today’s era, Internet has become an important part of our everyday life. From work to entertainment, most things now happen online. It is common to have internet at home and office, but when you travel in an airplane and still see WiFi working, it is a bit surprising. The special thing is that as soon as we board the flight, we are asked to turn on flight mode due to which the mobile network gets switched off. Then the question arises that where does the internet come from in the sky?

Internet in airplanes is not magic but a marvel of technology. Airlines companies do not create their own separate internet network but provide connectivity with the help of mobile towers and satellites present on the ground, that is, the plane remains connected to some network even during the flight.
What is Air-to-Ground technology?
If we understand this system in simple language, it works just like the mobile network. When the plane takes off, its system gets connected to the towers below. As the plane moves forward it keeps switching from one tower to another. Due to this, the internet connection remains intact even while flying at high speed.
Internet is also available through satellite
Where Air-to-Ground system does not work, satellite technology comes in handy. A special antenna is installed above the aircraft which receives signals directly from the satellite. The station on the ground first sends the signal to the satellite and then the same signal reaches the plane. In this way, internet remains available continuously no matter what altitude the plane is at.
How does WiFi reach the cabin?
Now the question arises that how does this internet reach the passengers’ phones? Actually, the antenna installed in the plane sends the signal to an inbuilt router. This router spreads the WiFi network throughout the cabin. As soon as you turn on WiFi in your phone, you get connected to that network. This system works exactly like a home WiFi router.
