AI Companion for Teens: Today’s young generation is not limiting the use of AI to just question-answer or chatting, but has made it a new medium to express their imagination and emotions. In the year 2022, a platform called Character.AI gave people the opportunity to create their own AI characters.
Within no time this app became very popular and crores of users joined it. Millions of different chatbot characters were created, a large number of which were teenagers. But in 2025, amid growing concerns about the safety of children, the platform banned users under 18 years of age.
Is AI really just becoming a “companion”?
It is often believed that youth use AI only for friendship or emotional support. But the reality is quite different from this. According to research, most teenagers use AI to get information. Taking help in homework is also a big reason and many people use it just for entertainment. The number of people using AI for emotional support or to overcome loneliness was found to be very low.
AI becomes a tool for entertainment and creativity
For teenagers, AI became not just a chatbot but a new platform of entertainment. Here they create stories with their favorite characters, roleplay and expand their imagination. Three special types of experiments with AI.

Many youth use AI to share their feelings, reduce stress or lighten their mood. They create comfort bots that give them encouragement or support them in difficult times.

Through AI, youth write new stories, expand the world of their favorite films or books and create new imaginations. This also improves their writing and creative skills.
Transformation in Identity
Some teens use AI to try out different identities or understand their life situations. They create characters that are based on their real life relationships or experiences.
Is just banning the solution?
Banning AI can be a step for security but it also affects the creativity and freedom of youth to experiment. Experts believe that there is a need to create better AI, such an AI which is both safe and also promotes the creativity of the youth.
