How many days are cooked food and dairy products safe?

Homemade cooked food usually remains safe in the refrigerator for only two to three days. After this, the risk of bacteria growing in it may increase. At the same time, it is better to use boiled milk only for two to three days, whereas packet milk should be consumed within 2 days after opening. Talking about curd, fresh curd remains good in the refrigerator for four to five days, but if it starts getting sour or has a strange smell then it should not be used.

How long should vegetables and fruits be kept?

Green leafy vegetables remain safe in the refrigerator for three to four days, while vegetables like carrots, beans and cauliflower can last for 5 to 7 days. Among fruits, apples and pears remain safe for 1 to 2 weeks. But fruits like grapes and strawberries can spoil in three to five days. It is not considered right to keep cut fruits in the refrigerator for a long time. These should be eaten within 24 hours, otherwise they may become contaminated.

Storage limits for eggs, meat and bread

Raw eggs remain safe in the refrigerator for 7 to 10 days, while boiled eggs should be eaten within two to three days. Raw chicken or meat should not be kept in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 days and fish should not be kept in the refrigerator for more than 24 hours. Bread can be kept in the refrigerator for 5 to 7 days, but if kept longer, its taste and texture may deteriorate.

Caution regarding rice, roti and pulses

Rice kept in the refrigerator should be eaten within 1 to 2 days. It is better to use roti within 12 to 14 hours, because if kept longer, its nutritional value reduces. At the same time, pulses should also be finished within two days, because if kept for more time, they can cause stomach related problems.

Do not make these mistakes while keeping food in the fridge

  • Hot food should never be kept directly in the refrigerator.
  • Keep raw and cooked food separately.
  • Always use air tight containers to store food.
  • Keep the temperature of the refrigerator between 3 to 4 degrees Celsius.
  • Throw away food immediately if it smells bad, goes moldy or changes color.
