When should we eat sweets?
According to a TOI report, the real mistake lies in our eating habits. While nowadays we eat sweets after finishing the meal, Ayurveda says that sweets should be tasted at the beginning of the meal. It is believed that by consuming sweet taste first, saliva and digestive juices get activated quickly, which improves digestion. If this sweet is eaten at the end, it slows down the digestion process.
This is the reason why when you eat sweets after eating, the body gets an instant jolt of energy, but this can weaken the digestive fire. In Ayurveda it is called Agni, which controls our entire digestive system. When you end up consuming too much sugar or desserts, it suppresses Agni, leading to problems like gas, bloating and indigestion. The body feels this imbalance and starts asking for sweets again and again.
Why do cravings occur?
The order of eating is also mentioned in the major texts of Ayurveda. It says that food should start with sweet taste, then sour and salty taste in the middle and bitter, pungent and astringent taste at the end. By doing this, all three doshas of the body, Vata, Pitta and Kapha remain balanced. If this sequence gets disturbed, an imbalance occurs in the body and cravings increase. Apart from this, modern food also increases this habit. When we eat too much carbohydrate or heavy food, the body immediately needs sweets to balance it. This is the reason that after eating heavy or non-vegetarian food, there is often a strong desire for sweets.

However, Ayurveda also believes that sweets are not completely bad. Sweets taken in the right quantity and at the right time can also be beneficial for the body. Craving sweets after meals is not just a habit but can also be a sign of imbalance going on inside the body.
