After independence, when the country adopted its Constitution and the Supreme Court was established on 26 January 1950, a new era of justice began. On this historic day, India got its first Chief Justice, Justice HJ Kania.
Justice Kania was born on 3 November 1890 in a scholarly family in Surat, Gujarat. Kania, who is keen on studies, did B.A from Samaldas College, Bhavnagar. and then completed his law studies from Government Law College, Bombay. During his studies, he had decided that he would make a name for himself in the field of justice.
In the year 1915, he started practicing law in the Bombay High Court. Hard work, simplicity and deep understanding of law quickly earned him recognition. In 1930, he became acting judge in the Bombay High Court, in 1931 he was appointed additional judge and in 1933 he was appointed permanent judge. He was also the acting Chief Justice in 1944 and 1945. This period was proof of his experience and leadership.
When did you take the oath?
In 1946, Justice Kania was made the judge of the Federal Court of India. This Federal Court later became the foundation of the Supreme Court. The country became independent on 15 August 1947 and the Supreme Court came into existence on 26 January 1950. On the same day, Justice HJ Kania took oath as the first Chief Justice of India (CJI).

What was the salary?
According to reports, when the Supreme Court was formed in 1950, the salary of the first CJI was fixed at Rs 5,000 per month. At that time, this amount was considered very respectable, but it was also a symbol of simplicity compared to the dignity of the position. Justice Kania was known for his calm nature, simplicity and justice.
How long did your tenure last?
His tenure was from 26 January 1950 to 6 November 1951. He departed from this world while still holding his post. In this way, he not only became the first CJI of the country, but also the first CJI to die while in office. The traditions that Justice Kania started in the early years of the Supreme Court later became the identity of the Indian judicial system. A strong foundation of court functioning, discipline and respect for the Constitution was laid during his time.
