AI in Wrong Hands: The fears that were being expressed about AI seem to be coming true. In a recent report, it is being claimed that AI has now fallen into the hands of terrorist organizations and now this technology is being used in everything from planning attacks to making weapons. A research paper shared with The New York Times provides evidence that Boko Haram members are using AI chatbots extensively. In interviews with 27 former members of this organization, it has come to light that ChatGPT, Cloud, Gemini, Grok and Meta AI are being used in making weapons, gathering technical information and planning attacks.
AI is being used in a completely organized manner
It has been said in the report that the use of AI is not limited only to the members of terrorist organizations. Boko Haram is using this technology in a completely organized manner and has also formed teams for internal training. Many of its members have bypassed the built-in safety protection of AI, after which these chatbots are now answering questions related to violence.
What is the risk of AI falling into the wrong hands?
Experts say that AI getting into the hands of terrorist organizations will not bring much change. They will need funding, logistics and communication etc. for operation like before, but one thing will change with AI. Due to AI, now even people with less experience can prove to be dangerous. This case also draws attention to the fact that there is a need to think on a larger level about the safety of AI tools.
What do AI companies have to say about this?
OpenAI said that using its ChatGPT chatbot for terrorist and violent activities is a violation of the rules and it is continuously working to prevent its misuse. Similarly, Meta said that the old model has been mentioned in the report. Safety has been improved in the new models. However, despite the companies’ clarifications, there will be constant pressure on them to take necessary measures to protect their models from misuse. As AI models are becoming powerful, the risk of their misuse is also increasing at the same pace.
