BGP Hijacking: Telegram has been banned in India till June 22. Telegram CEO Pavel Durov is very upset with this order of the government. Describing this order as wrong, he also blamed Reliance Jio and said that Reliance may also have a hand in the ban on Telegram. He says that to benefit WhatsApp, Reliance Jio is blocking access to Telegram even outside India with the help of BGP hijacking. On the other hand, Jio has denied these allegations. Know the allegations first
Durov wrote in a post on X that Reliance is blocking access to Telegram for people outside India including UAE by using a method called BGP hijacking. This is being done deliberately and Reliance has not even responded to the complaints related to this. Now these allegations have been denied by Reliance. The company said that it is not involved in any such incident.
What is BGP Hijacking?
Now let’s come to BGP Hijacking. The Internet is not a single network but is made up of thousands of small networks run by telecom companies, cloud providers and governments. When a user opens Telegram, YouTube or Instagram etc., his request reaches its destination through these different networks. The system by which these different networks locate each other is called Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). That is, BGP helps different networks to exchange information continuously. Without this, the network will not know which other network to send the data to next.
Can BGP be hijacked?
BGP is designed in such a way that it can be hijacked. Actually, there is no system inside it which can verify the route announcement on its own. If you understand in simple language, if one network announces that it can deliver traffic to a particular destination, then other networks accept that and work accordingly. That means this entire system works on trust. In such a situation, a network can divert traffic to the wrong path by giving false information or misinformation and when this happens, it is called BGP Hijacking. Voices have been raised about this for many years and despite better security, incidents of BGP Hijacking are still happening.
