Need explosive player, not anchor, Aakash Chopra angry over Gill's strike rate

Aakash Chopra Shubman Gill: After the victory of T20 World Cup 2026, a debate has erupted in Team India regarding the future captain. Former cricketer Aakash Chopra has completely rejected the possibilities of Shubman Gill's T20 captaincy. After poor strike rate and being out of the World Cup team, the path of comeback is looking difficult for Gill. Akash believes that Gill should focus on Test and ODI, because there is no place left for 'anchor' batsmen in T20.

New Delhi. Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav, after hoisting the tricolor in the T20 World Cup, has now set his sights on Olympic gold. But the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics is still two years away and by then Surya will be 37 years old. In such a situation, the question is arising whether Surya will be able to handle the captaincy till that time? And if not, then who will be the next T20 captain of Team India? Till some time ago, preparations were going on to make Shubman Gill the sole captain of all three formats. The selectors believed that having only one captain would lead to better coordination in the team. Gill was also given the command of Test and ODI, but his slow batting and form in T20 format has forced BCCI to change its strategy.
Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has completely rejected Gill's chances of T20 captaincy. Akash said on his YouTube channel, 'It sounds easy to have one captain for all three formats, but it does not seem possible for Gill in T20. Looking at the way the Indian team is playing at the moment, it is difficult for Gill's name to come up in the captaincy discussion. Shubman Gill was made the vice-captain of the team in Asia Cup 2025, due to which it was felt that he would be the successor of Surya. But after this there has been a huge decline in his performance.

Gill scored only 291 runs in 15 innings
Since then, Shubman Gill has scored only 291 runs in 15 innings. His batting average is just 24.25, which is worrying for a top order batsman. Gill's strike rate is 137.26 and that too without any half-century. Due to this poor form, he was also dropped from the team of T20 World Cup 2026. When Team India is now looking towards the score of 250 runs, the space for the batsmen who play the 'anchor role' is decreasing.
Aakash Chopra's advice to Shubman Gill
Aakash Chopra believes that Shubman Gill should not tamper with his natural game in the interest of T20. He warned and said, 'In our search for a T20 batsman, we should not lose Shubman Gill who can become a legend in Tests or has the potential to become the 'next king' of ODI. Returning to the T20 team and captaincy is now a difficult task for Gill.
