When the Kiwis were on the verge of being bowled out cheaply in the first innings, Phillips smashed the English bowlers at the Oval and scored the first century of his Test career. On the basis of his aggressive and courageous innings, not only did New Zealand strengthen its hold on the match, but the spectators present on the field stood up and applauded this Kiwi batsman. With his first Test century, Phillips also made a place in a unique club, in which there are only two New Zealand batsmen before him.

With his first Test century, Phillips achieved the feat of scoring a century in all three formats for New Zealand. He has become only the third New Zealand batsman to do so. Before him, only Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill have been able to achieve this feat. Phillips has scored two centuries each in ODI and T20 International.
Phillips bails out troubled Kiwi team
On the second day of the match, New Zealand started playing ahead of its yesterday’s score of 291/7. The team was in danger of being all out soon, but Glenn Phillips had other intentions. Together with the tail batsmen, they counter-attacked the fast bowlers of England. Phillips, along with Kyle Jameson (41 runs), made a very important and aggressive partnership of more than 70 runs for the eighth wicket.

Soon after, Phillips completed his first Test century in just 133 balls just before lunch. Just after completing his first Test century, Glenn Phillips could not take his innings further. He was out on the ball of Matthew Fisher. He scored 100 runs in his innings of 135 balls, which included 18 brilliant fours. Even though he was out as soon as he scored his century, by then he had taken New Zealand to a very strong score of 391.
