Virat Kohli world records IND vs ENG 2nd ODI: Virat Kohli has once again registered his name in golden letters in the pages of history. In the second ODI against England, Kohli set a batting record which has brought him to the pinnacle of world cricket. King Kohli has broken the historic world record of former Sri Lankan batsman Kumar Sangakkara, who was considered invincible till now.
England’s Sophia Gardens ground became a historical witness for Virat Kohli. Even before entering the second ODI match of the series, there was strong talk that Kohli was close to a big record. This 37-year-old Indian star made his intentions clear as soon as he stepped on the field. He faced the England bowlers bravely and as soon as he completed the 46th run of his innings, he made the world record of scoring the most runs on the home grounds of the opposition team.
Before Virat Kohli, the world record of scoring the most runs on the home grounds of opposition countries (Away ODIs – Home of Opposition) was held in the name of Sri Lanka’s great wicketkeeper batsman Kumar Sangakkara. During his illustrious career, Sangakkara scored a total of 5,518 runs on the home grounds of the opposing teams. Virat Kohli needed only 46 runs in the Cardiff ODI to cross this magical figure. Kohli crossed this figure by batting brilliantly and now he has reached the top of the list with 5,519* runs.
The most special thing about this record is that Virat Kohli has achieved this feat in very less matches than Kumar Sangakkara. While Sri Lankan legend Sangakkara had to play 149 ODI matches to score 5,518 runs on opposition grounds, Virat Kohli crossed this figure in only his 126th ODI match and created a new world record. This shows how consistent and effective Virat Kohli’s performance has been on foreign and challenging pitches.

If we look at the list of batsmen who have scored the most runs on opposition grounds, it includes the names of many greats of world cricket. After Virat Kohli (5,519) and Kumar Sangakkara (5,518), at third place in this list is former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, who has scored 5,090 runs in 132 matches. India’s great batsman Sachin Tendulkar is at fourth position with 5,065 runs in 147 matches and former Indian captain MS Dhoni is at fifth position with 4,520 runs in 145 matches.
The dominance of Asian batsmen, especially players from India and Sri Lanka, is clearly visible in this record list. Among the top 11 batsmen, Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene is sixth with 4,311 runs, Tillakaratne Dilshan is seventh with 4,288 runs and Sanath Jayasuriya is eighth with 4,087 runs. From India, Rahul Dravid is at ninth position with 4,044 runs and current captain Rohit Sharma is at tenth position with 3,942* runs. At the same time, Pakistan’s Inzamam-ul-Haq is at 11th position with 3,932 runs.
If we include the opposition grounds as well as the neutral venues, that is, we talk about all the away ODIs played outside India, then Virat Kohli’s record is very strong here too. Kohli has played a total of 183 ODI matches away from home in his career, in which he has scored 7,981* runs at an average of 55.48 and strike rate of 90.72. If he scores at least 65 runs during his innings in this match, he will complete his 8,000 runs on foreign grounds. While playing away from home, Kohli has 27 centuries and 41 half-centuries in his name.
Talking about the batsmen who have scored the most runs on foreign grounds for India, till now only two Indian batsmen in history have been able to cross the mark of 8,000 runs. The great Sachin Tendulkar has scored the maximum of 11,450 runs in 299 matches while playing away from home. After him comes the name of former captain Sourav Ganguly, who has scored 8,253 runs in 233 matches. As soon as Virat Kohli (7,981*) touches the 8,000-run mark, he will become the third Indian and eighth batsman in the world to join this elite club.
In this match in Cardiff, Virat Kohli not only broke Sangakkara’s record, but he also made a big record of Rahul Dravid, who is called ‘The Wall’ of India. Kohli has now become the Indian batsman who has scored the most runs in all formats (Test, ODI and T20) on English soil. Before this match, Virat Kohli needed only 4 runs to leave Dravid behind. He made this record in his name by hitting a brilliant four off Joffra Archer on the fourth ball of the ninth over of the match.
Virat Kohli’s bat has always spoken loudly in the challenging conditions of England. Kohli played his first international match in England in 2011. Now he has scored 2,688* runs in 75 innings of 59 matches on English soil. At the same time, Rahul Dravid had scored 2,645 runs in 56 innings of 46 matches in England between 1996 and 2011. This journey of Kohli on the soil of England speaks of his unmatched skill, technique and amazing ability to adapt himself to foreign conditions.
