Rajasthan's dressing room was fun, but the rules there were equally strict. There was a rule in the team. The player who made a mistake had to carry a pink colored doll. Bus, airport, hotel…everywhere. This punishment was given jokingly, but it clearly meant that the rules of the team were above all. Jadeja also roamed around with a pink doll several times. But the real lesson came when one day he and Yusuf Pathan were late for practice.
And when he was returning back to the hotel in the team bus, Captain Warne stopped the team bus midway. During this, Warne told him to get down and go to the hotel on foot. It was summer and the hotel was also quite far. But what Jadeja learned that day was useful throughout his life. Jadeja learned how important time and discipline are in professional cricket. After that day no player was ever late.
Just one mistake and things fall apart
But the real test was yet to come. Jadeja had played for India till 2009. His name had become famous. BCCI contract had been received. But his salary in IPL was the same as it was in 2008. Around Rs 20 lakh. On the other hand, his fellow players were being sold for crores. In such a situation, a 21 year old boy thinks that he should also get his rights. And to some extent this thinking was not wrong. But in cricket it is not enough to be right, it is important to do the right thing in the right way. And this is where Jadeja made a mistake.
His contract with Rajasthan Royals ended on 31 December 2009. Jadeja felt that now he was free. Now he can talk to any team. But the rules of IPL were not so settled. To become a free agent there, mere expiry of the contract was not enough. It was necessary to take NOC from the team. And Jadeja did not have that. From here the story took a dangerous turn.
Jadeja contacted Mumbai Indians. He shared his contract. Mumbai also showed interest. The conversation progressed between the two. Even Jadeja practiced with him. All this was happening silently. Rajasthan franchise was not aware of this. But nothing remains hidden for long in cricket. When Rajasthan came to know, the matter directly reached the IPL Governing Council.
Ravindre Jadeja.
When Jadeja was banned for one year
Now the question was in whose favor the decision would go. A young player who wanted a better contract or a league that wanted to tighten its rules. IPL was new at that time. If the rules were ignored at that time, every team would start bringing other players with them. Therefore the decision went in favor of the system. Hearing took place on 25 March 2010. Arun Jaitley's committee heard the case. Jadeja admitted that he wanted a better deal. He also said that he felt he was free. But the rules were clear. It was wrong to talk to other teams without NOC.
The decision came. Jadeja was banned for one year. He was out of IPL 2010. This was not just a punishment. This was a message that the rules of IPL are above all. The then Commissioner Lalit Modi also gave a strong statement. There was a lot of talk in the media about Jadeja. He was even called greedy. But the truth was that Jadeja could not understand the system completely.
The effect of this ban was not limited to IPL only. Earlier, his slow innings in the 2009 T20 World Cup was widely criticized. 25 runs in 35 balls against England. India lost the match. He was criticized on social media. And when the ban was imposed, people thought that this was the result of that. But this was a big shock for Jadeja. One year without IPL.
But this is where the real story begins. Jadeja went back to Saurashtra. Ranji Trophy played. Four day matches. Many long innings. He rebuilt himself. Showed patience in batting. Improved control in bowling. It also got a lot of benefits.
He came back to IPL in 2011. Kochi Tuskers Kerala bought him for a huge amount. This was the same player who was banned a year ago. Now the same player was being sold for a huge amount. This was the result of his hard work.
But the biggest twist of his story was yet to come. IPL 2012 auction. Many teams were behind him. Finally Chennai Super Kings bought him. And from here his life changed. Under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, Jadeja took himself to a new level. He is not just a player. He became the match winner. Wickets with the ball, runs with the bat and amazing in fielding. Jadeja started appearing everywhere.

Gradually he became one of the most reliable players of Team India. 2013 Champions Trophy, multiple IPL titles, 2024 T20 World Cup. He left his mark on every big stage. And the biggest thing is that now he was not the same as before. Now he understood the system. Now he played not just on talent but on discipline and wisdom.
IPL also changed with time. Now trades take place in the open. Hardik Pandya transferred in 2024. Everything happened as per the rules. There was no dispute. Because now the system has become stronger. And somewhere behind this change, there are stories like Jadeja's. Today, when Jadeja talks about joining Rajasthan Royals again in 2025, it is not just a transfer. This is a circle to be completed. The same team from where it all started. The same team which gave him the biggest lesson. And now the same player returns to that team as a senior, a leader.
If we understand this story in one line, then it is not just the story of a ban. This is a journey. Of a young player's mistake, his struggle, his comeback and his success. This story tells that it is not wrong to make mistakes. But it is also very important to learn from him.
