Tooth Regeneration: Is the need for false teeth going to end? The body will be able to grow its own teeth!

How Teeth Can Regrow Naturally: If a tooth breaks, it is lost forever, this has been believed till now. As a treatment, there are options like filling, implant or denture, but these cannot completely replace the real tooth. Now new research is slowly changing this thinking. Scientists are trying to understand whether the body can regenerate its own teeth and the bone that holds them.

What came out in the research?

Recent studies do not say that teeth will start growing again from tomorrow. But they have made one important thing clear that how teeth and the bone around them are formed. According to research published in the National Library of Medicine, its focus is on a special tissue present at the bottom of the tooth, which is called apical papilla. There are some special stem cells here, which can change into different types of cells when given the right signals. Among these, CXCL12-positive cells are considered especially important.

Can also convert into bone forming cells

When the root of a tooth is formed, the oxygen level in that part decreases. This situation activates these cells. After this, they form two types of essential cells, odontoblast, which makes dentin, the hard layer below the enamel, and cementoblast, which helps in attaching the tooth to the bone. Interestingly, these same cells can also transform into bone forming cells under certain conditions.

teeth begin to form properly

However, just having stem cells is not enough, they also need signals to work in the right direction. Wnt signaling plays an important role here. When it remains active, the cells start forming teeth properly. If this process stops, the cells move in the wrong direction and root development is affected. At the same time, another signal system named TGF-beta works to keep this entire process balanced.

Attention to dental follicle also

The tooth does not stand alone, the surrounding bone is also equally important to hold it. In the second study, scientists focused on a tissue called dental follicle. The cells present here work under the influence of Hedgehog signal. This signal should turn on and off at the right time. If it remains active for a long time, the process of bone formation becomes weak. In the right balance, these cells become osteoblasts, which produce new bone.

Can teeth grow back?

Now the question is whether teeth will be able to grow again in future? At present the answer is, not yet. This research is still in its initial stage. Most of the results have come from experiments conducted in the lab and on animals. Large scale tests on humans are still pending, and it is not clear how safe its effects will be in the long run. Still, Disha gives hope. In the future, treatment may not be limited to just fitting dentures, but may also extend to helping the body regenerate its own teeth.
