AI Chatbot Market Share: The increasing popularity of Gemini and Claude has posed a threat to the dominance of ChatGPT. For the first time since its launch in 2022, ChatGPT’s market share has fallen below 50 percent. This shows that as competition increases, it is becoming difficult for ChatGPT to maintain its strong position. On one hand, there has been a decline in the usage of ChatGPT, on the other hand, the usage of Google Gemini and Anthropic’s Cloud Chatbot has increased.
ChatGPT’s market share is decreasing since last 18 months
Sensor Tower has found out the market share of AI chatbots based on true audience. True audience means those unique users who use products on both mobile and web in a month. According to this, ChatGPT currently has 46.4 percent market share. The market share was 65.3 percent in December 2024, but due to increasing competition it kept decreasing. In March this year, it decreased from 50 percent and by May it reached 46.3 percent. This shows that it is becoming increasingly difficult for ChatGPT to add new users.
Gemini and Claude are moving forward rapidly
Google Gemini and Cloud chatbots, which compete with ChatGPT, are growing rapidly. Talking about Gemini, it has 27.7 percent market share and Claude has 10.3 percent market share. Both these chatbots are adding new users faster than ChatGPT. If we look at their growth story, Google has integrated Gemini everywhere including Search, Android and Workspace. Now people do not even need to download a separate app to use it. Its effect is visible on the numbers. In May 2026, Gemini’s monthly active users had reached 662 million. Similarly, the monthly active users of Cloud are only 24.5 crores, but the number of people paying to use it is more. The conversion rate of free users to paid subscribers in Cloud is 13 percent, which is higher than all other chatbots. Similarly, in terms of API access, Cloud is far ahead of all other companies. Claude has also become the fastest growing chatbot of this year.
