QR codes are now being used for everything from online payment to product information. Meanwhile, scientists have set a new record by creating the world’s smallest QR Code which can be used for storage. Although this is not a direct solution to the current memory crisis
World’s smallest QR Code
According to media reports, on December 3, 2025, scientists from Austria’s Vienna University of Technology and German company Cerabyte have jointly prepared a QR Code which has been declared by Guinness World Records as the world’s smallest QR Code.
The size of this QR Code is approximately 1.977 square microns. It is so small that it is not possible to read it with a normal camera or QR scanner. An electron microscope is required to see and scan it. One side of it is about 70 times thinner than the thickness of normal paper.
Is this technology the solution to the memory crisis?
It’s not like that. This small QR Code is just a scientific achievement. The real technology lies in Cerabyte’s storage system in which millions of microscopic dots are engraved on a very thin ceramic layer on glass with the help of a laser.
This technology is based on Write Once storage system. Therefore it cannot be used as a fast and frequently changing memory like RAM.
How big QR Code is better for common people?
For your information, let us tell you that if QR Code is being used in any poster, flyer or ad, then its size should be such that the smartphone can easily scan it. According to experts, QR Code should be at least one inch. If people have to scan it from a distance, then its size should also be increased according to the distance so that there is no problem in scanning.
