New Delhi. Most of the IPL captains expressed their concern over the Impact Player rule, which has been in the news since its implementation in 2023. In 2024, BCCI has extended this rule till at least 2027, but this strategic rule still remains a subject of debate among fans and players. In the IPL Captains Meeting in Mumbai, the captains of all the 10 teams talked in detail on this issue.
An IPL source said, 'Most of the captains gave their opinion and expressed their concerns on the Impact Player rule, although BCCI has extended it till 2027. They were told that this rule would be reviewed only after 2027, not before that.
The captain has expressed his displeasure
This week, Delhi Capitals captain Akshar Patel criticized this rule like Rohit Sharma. Akshar said, 'I don't like this rule because I am an all-rounder myself. Earlier we used to select all-rounders, now team management selects only batsman or bowler, they say what is the need of all-rounder? I don't like it, but rules are rules, we have to follow them. But personally I don't like it. In 2024, Rohit had said that he does not like the concept of Impact Player because it hinders the development of all-rounders in Indian cricket.

In the next season, Hardik Pandya had said that unless a player is equally good at both batting and bowling, it has become difficult to choose an all-rounder. Foreign player Glenn Phillips also said that this rule can have a negative impact on the future of the all-rounder. The Blackcaps player had said last season, 'I think sometimes there may be less all-rounders, which will affect the international game, T20s and ODIs.
Game guidelines changed
The captains demanded change of the ball after 10 overs of the first innings. Last season, BCCI had given permission to change the ball after 10 overs of the second innings so that the effect of dew could be reduced. On Wednesday, a captain demanded to change the ball even after 10 overs of the first innings, but it did not get much support. Usually there is more dew in the second innings and the current rule will remain the same. The captains also sought clarity on training guidelines. All the captains of IPL are Indians, SRH is being captained by Ishan Kishan as regular captain Pat Cummins is not available. He asked questions to the IPL officials on the training guidelines issued for the 2026 season. According to the guidelines given to the franchises, there will be no practice on the match day and if one team ends practice early, the other team cannot use the wickets. Captains asked for more clarity on training guidelines, which was given to them
