Claude Chats On Google: Recently, many such reports had come to light that people’s chats done with Anthropic’s Claude chatbot were visible on Google. The chats available on Google include many sensitive information like crypto wallet details, API keys, resume and company documents. When its screenshots surfaced, many users claimed that data had been leaked from Anthropic, due to which the chats had become publicly available on Google. Actually this is not an issue of data leak or data hack. Claude’s private chats are still private. The chats that have appeared on Google are related to those users who have used Claude’s public share feature. This feature converts chats into a publicly accessible webpage.
Where did the matter start?
Users on Reddit reported that Claude’s chats can be accessed by entering a simple query on Google search. Some people linked it to data leak, calling it a privacy failure, while many users said that these chats have been made public through the share feature. Many users posted its screen shots on X and called it a privacy problem. Then a long debate started regarding this.
How did the conversation on Claude reach Google search?
When this is not a case of data leak, then the question arises that how did these chats get indexed on Google search? In fact, when a user clicks on share while using Claude, chatbots create a public webpage of that conversation. Anyone can open this page and read that chat. The problem started when these webpages started appearing in Google search. This made it easier to read the chats of other users. Initially it was reported that Anthropic had forgotten to add the noindex tag on this webpage, but later analysis revealed that Anthropic had blocked search engines from crawling its shared page. Due to this, search engines like Google are not able to read the chats given on the webpage, but this method cannot stop the URL of the webpage from being indexed. This was the reason why many webpages started appearing in search results on Google and Bing. Now any user can read shared chats by clicking on them.
Is this a matter of concern?
If you are a Claude user and use the share feature then it is obviously a matter of concern, but if you have never used this feature then you should not worry. If you have used this feature before and now want to delete your chats, then Anthropic has explained the method. You go to the settings of the chatbot and open the privacy section. Here you will see the option of shared chats. By tapping on this you can review or remove chats.
What information was present in the chats on Google?
According to reports, information like crypto wallet, access credentials, resume, company document legal query and general conversation are given on the webpages indexed on Google. As soon as there was an uproar regarding this matter, people said that webpages gradually started disappearing from Google search. After this, these pages have started being removed from Bing and other browsers also. Keep in mind that removing a page from Google search does not disable links to webpages. That means users who already have the URLs can access them anytime.
Similar incident happened with OpenAI also
Anthropic is not the first company to face such an incident. Last year, OpenAI also rolled out a feature as an experiment, in which users could make their shared conversations discoverable on search engines. After this, when these chats started getting listed on Google search, the company immediately stopped this feature.
