How much electricity does a plugged in charger consume?
According to media reports, by leaving the charger on in the socket, electricity worth more than Rs 200 crore is wasted every year in India. It is estimated that a charger plugged in consumes 7.2 watts of electricity in a day. That means, if the charger remains on for the whole day, it consumes approximately 0.072 units of electricity. If we calculate the average price of electricity unit, then one charger consumes electricity worth about Rs 1-2 per month. This amount is very less for a single charger, but when millions of such chargers are plugged in every day, the electricity consumption can be estimated.
Not only electricity, there are other losses too
If you leave the charger plugged in and on, it continues to consume electricity. This wastage of electricity is called vampire power or phantom load. There is also a fear of electrocution due to this. Along with this, due to being continuously on, the charger or other electronic devices get overheated, which increases the risk of their getting damaged.
What is the correct way to use the charger?
After using the charger of any device including mobile or laptop, remove it from the socket or switch off the power. If you need a charger frequently, do not forget to turn off the power button after using it. Apart from this, use short cable while charging the device. Long cables weaken the signal and the device takes time to charge.
