Just as Lamin Yamal is being called 'generation talent' in football, a similar name is emerging rapidly in cricket too – Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the only difference is that this young Indian star is about four years younger than him. The way he proved his talent to the world at the age of just 14, he surprised the cricket world. Now on the eve of IPL 2026, as he completes 15 years, the discussion is whether he will soon be seen playing for Team India also.
Even today, Shardul has not been able to forget that moment when he took a six on the very first ball from a 14 year 23 day old boy. That boy was none other than Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who surprised everyone with his debut. Now that he is 15 years old, the biggest question before IPL 2026 is whether he will be able to shine in the same manner in the second season or will the bowlers catch his weakness. Its performance in the last one year has eliminated these apprehensions to a great extent.
Is debut in Team India near?
Now that Suryavanshi has turned 15, the discussion has moved from “when” to “how soon”. According to ICC rules, any player is eligible to play international cricket only after completing the age of 15 years and now this condition has been fulfilled. But eligibility and selection are two different things. Suryavanshi's journey has been extraordinary. Dominating the bowlers in local cricket since the age of 12, scoring a century in 35 balls in the IPL, and then scoring 439 runs in the Under-19 World Cup shows that he has grown rapidly at every level. Also, his performance in Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy has proved that he is capable not only in T20 but in every format.
Haste or waiting for the right time?
Even in the past, young talented players have got a chance in Indian cricket. Sachin Tendulkar made his Test debut at the age of 16, while Pakistan's Hasan Raza played international cricket at the age of 14, but the top order in the current Indian team is already very strong. Even a player like Yashasvi Jaiswal is not finding it easy to make a place in the T20 team. In such a situation, the biggest challenge for the selectors will be to give a chance to Suryavanshi in a hurry or wait for the right time. However, tournaments like the Asian Games to be held this year can prove to be a great platform to test young players, where Suryavanshi can get a chance.
If smashing a fast bowler like Geoffrey Archer in the nets was not enough, then his 'Player of the Tournament' performance in the 2026 Under-19 World Cup was no less than a miracle. This young batsman from Bihar scored 439 runs against players 4-5 years older than him at an average of 62.71 and a strike rate of 169.50, which is an almost impossible figure in the 50 over format.
What do ICC rules say?
As per the ICC Player Eligibility Rules (Article 4.1): A player shall be eligible to participate in international cricket (including ICC events) only if he is at least 15 years of age on the date of selection by the relevant team or on the first match of the series/tournament. The ICC had implemented this rule in November 2020, so that young players are not put under pressure at the international level too soon. Its objective is to ensure the safety of young players and balanced development of their career. Vaibhav Suryavanshi's talent is extraordinary and he can become the future of Indian cricket, but to take his career in the right direction, it will be more important to take the right decision at the right time rather than being hasty.
