Telegram App Banned In India: Taking a big step before the NEET (UG) 2026 Re-Exam, the Government of India has imposed a temporary ban on the Telegram app. There will be a complete ban on this platform till June 22 and the Telegram app will not be accessible during this period. After this, the message-editing feature on Telegram will be disabled till June 30. This decision has been taken in view of the incidents of use of apps like Telegram in exam leak incidents. Why is Telegram used?
People involved in paper leak incidents sell leaked or fake exam papers on apps like Telegram etc. Due to the secrecy available on Telegram and its large group size, scammers and people running cheating networks choose it. There is no hard limit for adding members to Telegram groups. 200 members can be added to the basic group and as soon as this limit is crossed, the group automatically converts into a supergroup.
Secrecy is also useful
Cyber criminals also take advantage of the secrecy of Telegram. Secret channels can be created on this. Once such a channel is created, its link is sent to the students who are preparing for the exam. Parents are also added to such channels. Many times people involved in incidents of paper leak etc. get the question paper even before the exam. They take photos of it and share it in private groups. After uploading a photo in the group, it can be sent to thousands of people simultaneously. This month, Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force had arrested a mastermind running an online fraud racket, who used to leak question papers through Telegram channels. A day before the exam date, he used to create different channels and leak question papers for Rs 2,000-3,000.
There are also attempts to commit fraud
Many times fraud is also done in the name of paper leak on Telegram channels. Scammers defraud students by editing the timestamp of an old message or by creating a fake paper. They demand thousands to lakhs of rupees in exchange for this paper. They usually demand money through QR code and in many cases also in cryptocurrency.
