Synthetic Cells Research University Of Minnesota: Scientists have claimed to have achieved a major achievement in the field of biology. Researchers have developed such synthetic cells, which can grow by taking nutrition like natural cells and can also increase their numbers. Scientists believe that this discovery can prove to be an important step towards developing living-like systems from inanimate substances in the future. This project has been named Spudcell and it has been developed by scientists from the University of Minnesota, America.
What is its specialty?
According to Kate Adamala, the scientist who led the research, her team has succeeded in replicating with the help of chemistry those processes which till now were considered to be characteristic only of living cells. He says that the basic properties of life like growth of cells and replication are not dependent on any mysterious power, but can also be prepared scientifically. However, he also clarified that Spudsel cannot be called a completely living organism.
Actually, these synthetic cells are still lagging behind natural cells in many respects. To survive, it needs nutrients and ribosomes from outside, which work to make proteins. Apart from this, it does not have the ability to protect itself from infection nor can it expel waste materials effectively. That means it is not capable of surviving long on its own.
Why is this discovery considered important?
Experts are considering this achievement as very important. He says that for the first time, fundamental processes like life have been successfully demonstrated in a synthetic system. Scientists believe that if this technology is developed further, then in the future, micro living systems or ‘living machines’ designed as per the need can be created, which can be used in fields like medicine, environmental protection and biotechnology.

How different is it from natural cells?
Spudcells are designed to be much simpler than natural cells. Normal cells use an internal structure called a cytoskeleton to divide, but in Spudcell the scientists adopted a different strategy. In this, some special proteins gather on the cell membrane and create so much pressure that the membrane gets divided into two parts. The researcher also made a genetic change in it, which increased the production of a special fusion protein. The result was that sales grew faster than before and more new sales were created.
Very important for biological research
The scientist said that after five generations, the rapidly growing cells performed better than the initial cells. Another special thing is that while the size of the human genome is about 3 million kilobase pairs, the genome of the spudcell is only 90 kilobase pairs. Its genetic material is divided into seven separate DNA plasmids instead of one large chromosome, allowing scientists to independently control and program different functions of the cells. This feature makes this technology very important for future biological research.
