Before the semi-finals, the African team was invincible in the tournament and was considered a strong contender to win the title, but it could not cross the hurdle of knock out. In such a situation, after the end of the tournament, former England cricket team captain Michael Vaughan has given a controversial statement regarding South Africa.
Michael Vaughan has said that if South Africa had allowed West Indies to defeat them in the Super 8 of the T20 World Cup, India would have been out of the tournament and this would have been the only way to stop India's victory. Vaughan said that if South Africa had allowed West Indies to win at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, it would have been very difficult for India to reach the semi-finals and perhaps India would have been eliminated.

A few days after the T20 World Cup ended, Vaughan said that South Africa should have tried to oust India as the hosts were the strongest team in the tournament. Vaughan said, “Let me tell you, who did I find the most stupid team? South Africa. Because if South Africa had allowed West Indies to win in the Super 8, India would have been eliminated.”
Vaughan said in the 'Stick to Cricket' podcast, “I'm just saying, if they had eliminated India, the winning streak that was coming would have stopped. By winning that match, they allowed India to move forward. Then India beat Zimbabwe, then West Indies in a kind of quarterfinal and then England.”
India won the title for the third time
The Indian cricket team was defeated by South Africa in the Super-8, due to which the semi-final equation became difficult for them. Team India had to register victory against West Indies and Zimbabwe at any cost. Apart from this, South Africa also had to win all its matches. If South Africa had lost against West Indies in the tournament, the Indian team's work would have been spoiled in terms of run rate, but South Africa had won all three of its matches in the Super-8.
After the defeat in the first match of Super-8, India made a tremendous comeback and confirmed its place in the semi-finals. Team India defeated England in the semi-finals and defeated New Zealand by 96 runs in the final to win the T20 World Cup title for the record third time.
