Rohit Sharma may be away from the field for 6 weeks, IPL journey may end
New Delhi. The current season of IPL is proving to be a nightmare for Mumbai Indians (MI). The team was already under pressure after three consecutive defeats, and now captain Rohit Sharma’s hamstring injury has given sleepless nights to the team management. Before the important match against Punjab Kings on Thursday, Rohit’s playing looks doubtful, which has raised a big question mark on Mumbai’s batting order and strategies.
Last Sunday, Mumbai suffered a double blow in a high-scoring thriller against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). On one hand the team had to face defeat by 18 runs, while on the other hand Rohit Sharma was forced to leave the field due to injury. Rohit was looking in great form and had scored 19 runs in 13 balls, but during the sixth over he felt a strain in his hamstring. Due to increasing pain, he had to ‘retire heart’ and return back to the pavilion.
‘Hitman’ under the supervision of medical staff
Giving an update on Rohit’s fitness during the Mumbai Indians training session on Wednesday, a team official said, “Our medical team and coaching staff are continuously assessing Rohit. Currently, he is under intensive observation and the decision on his selection against Punjab will be taken just before the match.
Rohit is not only the opening batsman of Mumbai but also the guide of the team. In such a situation, if he does not take the field against Punjab, it will be a big loss for Mumbai not only technically but also psychologically. The team has had a very bad start this season and their fourth consecutive defeat can push them far back from the race for the playoffs.
Waiting for foreign players and entry of Will Jacques
While Rohit’s injury is a matter of concern, the availability of foreign players is also a headache for MI. The latest information about England’s star all-rounder Will Jacques is that he has left for India and will join the team soon. However, he has missed the first four matches of this season and due to fitness protocol will not be able to be a part of the match against Punjab on Thursday.
Apart from Jacques, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner has also not been able to provide full strength to the team yet. Santner has played only two matches so far. According to the report, both Jacques and Santner had asked for additional time to join the team due to personal reasons or workload management. The absence of these key players has disturbed the balance of Mumbai’s playing eleven.
For Mumbai Indians, the match against Punjab Kings is a ‘do or die’ situation. Rohit Sharma’s fitness will be a lifeline for the team, but if he sits out, then Suryakumar Yadav and other senior players will have to take the responsibility. Will Mumbai be able to overcome this crisis or will the Punjab team increase their problems further? Its decision will be taken on the field on Thursday evening.
