New Delhi. IPL, the world’s richest and most dazzling cricket league, is currently in the news less for its thrills and more for the falling standard of umpiring. In the match played between Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, once again the decision of the ‘third umpire’ raised big questions on the spirit of the game and the use of technology. In the very second over of the match, an incident occurred which enraged the thousands of fans present in the stadium and crores of viewers on social media. KKR opener Finn Allen played a high shot on the ball of fast bowler Prince Yadav. Fielder Digvesh Singh Rathi, posted at third man, initially made a mistake in judging the ball, but then retreated and took the catch.
The controversy started when the replays clearly showed that Digvesh Rathi’s left foot was touching the boundary rope while completing the catch. The rule is clear that if the fielder holds the ball in his hand while touching the boundary, then it should be considered a six. However, third umpire K.N. Ananthapadmanabhan spent very little time on this sensitive decision and declared Allen out without investigating in depth. As soon as ‘OUT’ flashed on the screen, the KKR camp and fans were stunned.
