Oral Cancer Treatment: Ultrasound can eliminate oral cancer cells, this study raises hope

Can Ultrasound Kill Oral Cancer Cells: Oral cancer is one of the fastest growing cancers in India. The biggest reason for this is considered to be excessive consumption of tobacco and betel nut. Till now, surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are used to treat this disease, but in these methods there is a risk of damaging the cancer cells as well as the healthy cells. In such situations, patients have to face many types of side effects. However, now a new research has shown a new ray of hope regarding treatment.

What new did the scientist discover?

Scientists of the Indian Institute of Science have found in their new study that oral cancer cells can be targeted with the help of low-frequency ultrasound. The most important thing is that this process has very little impact on the surrounding healthy cells. If similar results emerge in further research, then in future this technology can become a safe and less harmful option for the treatment of oral cancer.

Tested on oral tumor samples

During this research, the scientist along with the doctors of MS Ramaiah Medical College and Hospital conducted tests on oral tumor samples obtained from patients. Using samples taken directly from patients rather than lab-grown cancer cells allowed researchers to get more accurate results based on real-world conditions.

Cannot tolerate light mechanical pressure

The study revealed that oral cancer cells are unable to tolerate the mild mechanical pressure caused by ultrasound. One reason for this is believed to be low levels of a protein called Tropomyosin 2.1. This protein helps normal cells to sense and protect themselves from external pressure. When cancer cells were exposed to ultrasound, they started getting destroyed, whereas its effect on healthy cells remained very limited.

How beneficial is ultrasound?

The researcher also found that ultrasound not only helps in eliminating cancer cells, but also reduces their ability to spread to a great extent. This technique also weakens the protective layer around the tumor, which sometimes prevents medicines and the body’s immune cells from reaching the cancer. This may also help in increasing the effectiveness of medicines in future.

Can open the way for the future

Scientists say that ultrasound is already used in the medical field as a safe and non-offensive technique. Therefore, if it gives positive results in further pre-clinical and clinical trials, it may open new possibilities in the treatment of oral cancer as well as other cancers like breast and skin cancer. However, at present this research is in the initial stage and many more tests will be conducted before adopting it as a regular treatment.
