BharatGen AI Model: Amidst the intensifying race regarding AI, India is also trying to strengthen its place. During the Bharat Innovates 2026 event held in Nice city of France, IIT Bombay has simultaneously launched several AI models under the name BharatGen. Their special thing is that these models can think in Indian languages. While AI models like ChatGPT and Gemini have been designed focusing on English and other global languages, the BharatGen model will also be able to understand 22 languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution and generate content in them. That means AI models will now not only understand Indian languages but will also be able to generate content in them.
Different AI models for different tasks
BharatGen includes different AI models for different tasks. The most important one in this is Param2. This is a foundational text model, which can use reasoning, coding and external tools. It is capable of working in all Indian languages. The Shrutam2 model included in this collection can convert speech into different Indian languages. Similarly, Sooktam2 is a text-to-speech model, which has the ability to clone voice from a very small sample. IIT Bombay has also included Patram in it. It will be able to understand the commonly used documents and forms in the country. IIT Bombay says that BharatGen has been developed for use in sectors like governance, healthcare, education, finance and insurance etc. More than 60 researchers, linguists and engineers from different institutions have together completed this project.
Timing is also very important
BharatGen models have been launched at a time when AI is being seen as a strategic technology. Recently, at the behest of America, Anthropic had locked its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for foreign citizens. After this, the concern has started increasing that due to geopolitics the world’s most advanced AI models will not be able to reach the entire world. India is becoming one of the largest AI markets in the world and here everyone from common people to startups and big companies are dependent on AI models of western companies. In such a situation, BharatGen can create a new hope, which will give the people of India a chance to interact with AI in their own language.
