New Delhi. Whenever there is talk of records in the world of cricket, the first name that comes to mind is 'Master Blaster' Sachin Tendulkar. But do you know that Sachin does not hold the world record for scoring a century at the youngest age in One Day International (ODI) cricket? Wasn't it surprising? There is such a magical moment recorded in the pages of the history of cricket when at the age of just 16, a batsman created a stir by coming on the field. While children at this age prepare for school examinations, this young player defied the world's best bowlers and set a record which no one has been able to break till date. Let us know who the cricketer is.
The world record for scoring a century at the youngest age in the history of ODI cricket is in the name of former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi. He accomplished this feat at the age of just 16 years and 217 days. It was the year 1996, when 'KCA Centenary Tournament' of four countries was being played in Nairobi (Kenya). Sri Lankan bowlers were blown away
October 4, 1996. Afridi was only 16 years old at that time and this was only his second ODI match. He was sent to bat at number three as a 'pinch hitter'. Afridi started hitting fours and sixes as soon as he came and created a stir by completing his century in just 37 balls. This was the record for the fastest century in ODI. He hit 11 sixes and 6 fours to complete his century. Afridi's innings was of 40 balls, in which he scored 102 runs. Afridi was also the batsman who scored the fastest century in this format for a long time.
Sachin's bat created history
There is a very interesting story associated with this record of Afridi. The bat with which he played this stormy innings against Sri Lanka was not actually his. That bat was gifted by Sachin Tendulkar to Pakistani player Waqar Younis. Afridi got that bat from Waqar and he made a world record with the same bat of Sachin.
Afridi himself later said in an interview, 'Waqar gave me that bat in Nairobi, where I made my debut for Pakistan. He told that this bat was given to him by Tendulkar and he asked him to get a similar bat made in Sialkot. Afridi had said about his historic innings, 'That record still stands and I am proud of it. I have made other good scores with this bat, so it is very valuable for me.
