For your information, let us tell you that while using a smartphone, the thumb keeps making the same movements continuously. Repeated scrolling, typing and using a large screen phone with one hand puts more pressure on the joint and tendon of the thumb. Doing this for a long time causes pain, stiffness and fatigue. In some cases, this problem can also take the form of swelling in the tendon.

Now if you are also feeling pain, swelling, stiffness or a clicking sound in your thumb while or after using the phone, then this could be a signal of thumb pain. Apart from this, feeling weakness in holding something or difficulty in bending the thumb can also be initial symptoms. In such a situation, it is better to reduce the use of the phone for some time.

Let us tell you that if you use smartphone for many hours every day, then you can avoid this problem by adopting some small habits. It is important to take a break of a few minutes every 20 to 30 minutes. Apart from this, use the phone by holding it with both hands so that there is not too much pressure on one thumb. Also, use voice typing or stylus if needed. Avoid continuous chatting or gaming for long periods of time. Don’t rely solely on your thumb to scroll the screen.

Apart from this, light stretching of the thumb and wrist provides relief to the muscles. Slowly move the thumb back and forth and in a circular motion.

Open the palm and spread the fingers and keep them in the same position for a few seconds. Doing such exercises 2 to 3 times a day can help in reducing pain and stiffness.
