Why Metabolic Diseases Are Rising In India: The burden of metabolic diseases is increasing rapidly in India and has now become a matter of serious concern. According to a recent study, India has reached first place in the Asia-Pacific region in terms of deaths and disability adjusted life years due to type 2 diabetes. In this study conducted by experts from 11 countries, it was told that in the year 1990, the highest number of cases of type 2 diabetes was in China, followed by India, Indonesia, Japan and Pakistan. But by the year 2023, the situation changed and India overtook China to become the country with the highest number of cases. This analysis is based on data from Global Burden of Disease. The study also revealed that India and China are bearing the highest burden of the five major metabolic diseases type 2 diabetes, high BP, body mass index, bad cholesterol and fatty liver disease in the Asia-Pacific region.
What do experts say?
According to study writer Anoop Mishra, India ranks first in terms of disease burden and deaths related to type 2 diabetes, while in the remaining four diseases, China is first and India is second, which is a matter of serious concern. He said that according to the data of the year 2023, India is facing the largest burden of metabolic diseases in the Asia-Pacific region. More than 2.1 crore cases and nearly 5.8 lakh deaths have been recorded in the country due to Type 2 diabetes alone, which shows its huge impact.”

He also said that diabetes, obesity, high BP, abnormal cholesterol and fatty liver are interrelated conditions, which are increasing mainly due to poor diet and lack of physical activity. These diseases later cause serious problems like kidney failure, heart attack, heart failure, severe liver disease, paralysis and many types of cancer.
How many people suffered?
According to the study, in the year 2023, 2,13,45,118 cases and 5,78,367 deaths related to type 2 diabetes were recorded in India, while in China this figure was 1,09,40,382 cases and 1,72,911 deaths. Across the Asia-Pacific region, approximately 49 million cases of type 2 diabetes are expected to be reported by 2023, of which men account for 54.1 percent. At the same time, the highest burden in this region was due to high BP, which resulted in about 138 million disease burden years and 62.7 lakh deaths. This was followed by diseases related to excess body weight, bad cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and fatty liver. Between 1990 and 2023, the total disease burden has increased by 1.7 to 3.7 times. It is estimated that the burden of these diseases will increase further by the year 2030, in which high BP will remain the biggest cause.
