Mental Health Special Theatres: On hearing the name of hospital, the first thing that comes to mind is the sound of machines, medicines, worries about treatment and a stressful atmosphere, but do you know that there is a country in the world where special theaters have been built inside hospitals. In which country are special theaters being built to improve mental health?
In Britain, to improve the mental health of patients, special theaters called Medicinema have been built inside hospitals. In these theatres, hospitalized children and older patients can enjoy new films, thereby forgetting the pain, stress and hospital environment for some time. Currently, 9 such medicinema theaters are operating in different hospitals of Britain. Here the doctors and nurses decide who can go to watch the movie according to the health condition of the patients. The aim of this initiative is to provide mental relief to the patients along with treatment and to give them a normal life like experience.
How is the treatment here?
Simon Hickson is in charge of the operations of Medicinema. Every morning he goes to different wards of the hospital, talks to the doctors and nurses and decides which patients are in a position to watch the film. Before the movie starts, nurses and patients are brought from their wards to the theatre. There are not only seats in the theatre, but special places have also been created where patients lying on four beds and patients sitting on three recliners can watch the movie comfortably.

This theater is open for patients of all ages
During a screening, patients of different ages and health conditions were present here. These included a pregnant woman, a 4-year-old child suffering from autoimmune disease, a 71-year-old woman suffering from bone disease and other patients. Gary Cook, 72, who was admitted after seriously injuring his legs in an accident, jokingly asked before the start of the film what would happen if someone had to go to the bathroom during the film or a patient suddenly had a heart attack. On this, the nurse present nearby told that if needed, the medical staff will be present for immediate help.
How did Medicinema start?
About 30 years ago, Christine Hill saw some children at St. Thomas Hospital happily spending time in the hospital garden. Then the idea of starting a cinema inside the hospital came to his mind, so that patients can also forget their troubles for some time through films. Despite initial opposition, he collected money to convert a lecture theater in the hospital into a cinema. After this, the first Medicinema started in December 1999, where the film Inspector Gadget was shown for the first time.
