Kitchen Spices Safety Tips: Has the color of kitchen spices changed? How to know whether it is safe to use or not

Kitchen Spices Safety Tips : : Use of spices is most important in enhancing the taste of food. Spices like turmeric, red chilli, coriander, cumin and garam masala are a part of almost every Indian kitchen. But many times people keep using the spices purchased once for months or years. In such a situation, the question arises whether the old spices are safe or should they be replaced.

If the color of the spices has changed, the aroma is no longer the same or their taste has become dull, then it is important to check some things before using them. In such a situation, let us know when spices are considered bad and how to identify whether it is safe to use them or not.

When are spices considered bad?
Spices do not spoil quickly like milk, curd or vegetables, but their quality definitely starts reducing with time. When kept for a long time, the taste and aroma of the spices gradually starts losing due to coming in contact with oxygen. This is called oxidation. Such spices do not give the same taste in food as before.

How to know whether it is safe to use or not?

The easiest way for spices to get spoiled can be detected by their aroma, color and texture. If the aroma of the spice is not as strong as before, then it is not considered safe to use. Apart from this, if the color appears faded, dull or changed or the spices feel sticky then it is not safe to use them. Also, a strange smell starts coming out and small insects or white layers appear, which can be a sign of fungus. In such a situation, one should avoid using that spice.

Can eating old spices cause illness?

If the spice is dry and there is no moisture, mold or insects in it, then it will not necessarily make you sick even after the expiry date. Although its taste and aroma may be quite low, but if there is moisture in the spices, fungus has grown, insects are visible or the smell starts coming out, then eating such spices can increase the risk of problems like stomach ache, gas, allergies and food poisoning. Such spices can spoil quickly during rainy and summer seasons.

2. Never put a wet spoon in the spice box.

3. Keep the spices away from the heat of gas stove and direct sunlight.

4. Store in cool and dry place.

6. Instead of buying spices in excess quantity, buy them in small quantities.

7. For better taste, buy whole spices and grind them at home as per requirement.
