Instagram Copyright Strike Extortion Network: A PIL has been filed in the Delhi High Court demanding investigation into an alleged cyber extortion network running on Instagram. It has been said in the petition that this network is targeting content creators by misusing the copyright system of Instagram. A demand has been made to form a special investigation team to investigate this network. The petition has been filed by content creator Nitin Joshi and he alleges that fake copyright strikes are done on Instagram accounts. This closes the account. What is the whole matter?
The petitioner says that an organized network is misusing Instagram’s copyright reporting system. This network targets any Instagram account through bot accounts. These accounts lodge complaints of copyright infringement. This starts Instagram’s automated enforcement process, in which the account is suspended or disabled without any notice or verification.
Money is demanded to withdraw the strike
The petition states that once an Instagram account is suspended or disabled, the content creator is contacted by the network. Then these networks demand a huge amount to withdraw the copyright complaint. The petitioner’s lawyer said that this is a new emerging cyber crime, in which the copyright enforcement mechanism of the Meta platform is being used for ransom.
The petitioner gave his own example
Petitioner Joshi said that he had published a video titled “Instagram’s biggest copyright scam”. After this, many other creators have shared evidence of similar fake complaints with him. Joshi alleged that soon after the video was published, his video was blocked worldwide due to copyright complaint. This shows how Meta’s reporting mechanism is being misused. The petitioner has demanded the formation of a SIT to investigate this entire matter. Earlier this matter was to be heard on July 15, but after a judge withdrew from the hearing, the case will be heard on July 28.
