Reliance Jio Satellite LEO Network: Reliance Jio has got the necessary approval for satellite internet. Actually, Jio wants to deploy 1600 satellites in low-earth orbit. The country’s space regulator IN-SPACe has approved this proposal of the company. Jio’s plan has been considered technically sound in the technical review conducted jointly with ISRO and Department of Telecommunication (DoT). After getting this approval, Jio will now be able to do international filing for orbital slots. With this, the way will be cleared for Jio to build India’s first satellite broadband constellation.

Jio wants to deploy 1600 satellites in low-earth orbit. The orbit zone 160-2000 kilometers above the Earth is called low-Earth orbit. With the help of 1600 satellites, Jio will create a communication network in space, which will be useful in providing high-speed internet and mobile connectivity across the country. Elon Musk’s company Starlink is already providing satellite internet, but it has not yet received approval to start its service in India.
Jio will also build 20-22 ground stations
According to Jio’s proposal, the satellite network will be designed to offer a capacity of 4.5-5Tbps. This is much higher than many other satellite projects. To support its satellite operations and network services, Jio will also prepare 20-22 ground stations across the country. This network will be used to provide services to consumer and enterprise segments. Apart from this, Jio is also planning to provide fixed satellite services like broadband and cellular backhaul as well as mobile satellite services like direct-to-device.
Jio’s proposal is solid compared to competitors
IN-SPACe has approved and said that Jio’s proposal is technically at the level of the world’s biggest companies with satellite systems. If we talk about capacity, Starlink has got approval for 600Gbps speed in India. Whereas Amazon’s Project Kuiper will offer speed of 3Tbps. This too is yet to be approved in India. In comparison to these, Jio has come up with a proposal of speeds up to about 5Tbps.
What is the next step after getting approval?
Jio has just received approval from the Government of India, but before deploying the satellite, many more approvals will have to be taken at the international level. International Orbital Right is also included in these. For this, Jio has sought help from the Government of India in getting rights from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
