AI Impact on Gen-Z IQ: Gen-Z is the first generation whose IQ is lower than that of its parents. One of the world’s top neuroscientists, Dr. Jared Cooney Horvath says that the generation born between 1997-2010 has become the first generation to perform worse than their parents in academics. He says that this situation has happened due to excessive dependence on technology. What is even more worrying is that many people of this generation think that they are very smart. Technologies like social media and AI are being held responsible behind this.
Gen-Z lags behind in these matters
Cognitive development has been monitored for the last several decades. This is the first time that this has happened with Gen Z, when they have performed worse than the generation before them in terms of basic attention, memory, literacy, math skills, problem solving ability and general IQ. This is when children are spending more time in school than children of the 20th century. Horvath says that this is happening because of education technology. Now tablets and computers have become common and there is no room left for real learning. Students keep scrolling videos on TikTok and Instagram for hours. Now instead of reading books, they are watching their summary in short videos.
How has AI made an impact?
Gen-Z is the first generation which is considered to be the most powerful in human history and is living in the era of AI technology. At a prompt, AI can explain, calculate, summarize, design and code. It is also superfast in terms of reasoning. All these things seemed like a fantasy 10 years ago. Now that the answer to every question is one prompt away, the need to remember and think is slowly disappearing. However, Gen-Z alone cannot be blamed for this. This generation is living in a world where everything has become easy and this is not happening for the first time. This happens with every technological advancement. After the advent of the printing press, the need to remember ended. Calculators changed mental arithmetic, while the Internet changed the entire game of information. Similarly, now AI is changing the entire matter of accessing and generating knowledge.
