Father Of Internet: Vinton Cerf, known as the Father of Internet, is retiring this month. Cerf, who is working as Chief Internet Evangelist at Google, will leave his post next week. He has been associated with Google for the last 20 years. However, till now there has been no response from Cerf and Google on this, but while introducing Cerf at an event, the presenter has informed about his retirement. Let us know what is the contribution of Cerf in the beginning of Internet.
How did the Internet start?
Cerf is now 83 years old. While working as a professor at Stanford University in 1973, he created networking protocols with Robert Kahn, which later became the Internet. Together they began designing Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and Internet Protocol (IP), which would allow different computer networks to communicate with each other. This protocol is considered the foundation of the Internet and for creating it, Cerf and Kahn are also called the Fathers of the Internet. According to reports, it took him about 6 months to do this work.
Work is not limited to TCP/IP
Cerf’s contribution to the beginning of the Internet is not limited to creating the TCP/IP protocol. In 1976, he started working with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). This was an agency of the Department of Defense and the same department was working on the ARPANet project since 1969. This project was designed for interaction between military and research systems. Cerf did a lot of work here on Internet development and Internet related data packet and security technology. Due to his contribution in the beginning of the Internet, he has been honored with many prestigious awards in America and he has worked with many important organizations.
It took time for the first website to arrive
Even though work on the Internet had started around the 1970s, it took a long time for the world’s first website to go live. info.cern.ch is considered to be the world’s first website and it went live on 6 August 1991. British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee created this website. It was launched at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, and contained information from the World Wide Web project.
