‘Enjoy the match… Madras High Court refuses to stop IPL during Tamil Nadu Assembly elections

New Delhi. A good news has emerged for the fans of the Indian Premier League. Madras High Court on Tuesday (April 7) heard a case related to the IPL match to be held at Chepauk Stadium in Chennai. There was a demand to reschedule the dates of the matches keeping in mind the assembly elections to be held in the state. Its petition was rejected after being withdrawn.

A bench of Chief Justice SA Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan noted. One match has already taken place since the petition was filed. There is nothing to show that any violation took place during the match. The court also said that the Election Commission of India is taking necessary steps and if any violation occurs, the petitioner can approach the Commission. The court orally said, “Even after your petition, a match took place. You could not show any violation. You watched the match, right? You enjoyed it. Enjoy the next matches also.”

The court also said that the PIL was filed on the basis of apprehension and anticipation so that there would be no violation at the time of the match. The court said that it cannot accept the petitions on the basis of such apprehensions and predictions. The court said, “We cannot do anything here. This is the job of the Election Commission. They are taking steps. If there is any violation, you can approach the Election Commission. Point out the violation before the Commission. Permission is always there. Who has stopped you from approaching the Commission? Your petition says that there should be no violation, it is all anticipation and apprehension. You show me a single judgment in which the PIL has been accepted only on the basis of apprehension or apprehension. We have given many judgments that the Election Commission is already in place and He is watching everything.”

This petition was filed by T Prabhakaran to reschedule the dates of the proposed IPL matches at Chepauk Stadium. Alternatively, the petitioner had sought a direction from the court to ensure that. The model code of conduct should be strictly followed during the match and no political symbols, logos etc. should be displayed publicly during the match.

The petitioner said that as per the announcement of the Election Commission of India, the assembly elections in the state are to be held on 23 April 2026 and the counting of votes will take place on 4 May 2026.
