Initially its symptoms seem like normal viral fever, but within a few hours or two-three days the infection can reach the brain and prove fatal.
Its risk increases during monsoon
According to the National Center for Disease Control, outbreaks of Chandipura virus have already occurred in India. Its risk increases especially during monsoon, because the sandfly that spreads it becomes more active in this season. Dr. Manju Kedarnath told TOI that this infection is definitely rare, but its speed is very fast. Therefore, timely identification and treatment is most important. According to him, the disease starts with high fever, headache, nausea and weakness. After this, the virus can rapidly affect the brain, causing serious problems like vomiting, restlessness, seizures and unconsciousness. If timely treatment is not received, the patient may go into coma within 48 to 72 hours and there may also be a threat to life.
Which people are most at risk?
According to doctors, the risk is highest in children below 15 years of age. Children’s developing nervous system and weak immune system can make them more sensitive to serious infections. If the child shows symptoms like fever more than 101 degrees Fahrenheit / 38.3 degrees Celsius, repeated vomiting, seizures, changes in behavior, extreme lethargy or fainting, then he should be taken to the hospital immediately. Experts say that in such cases the first few hours are very important.
Is there any cure for it?
It is also a matter of concern that at present neither any specific antiviral medicine nor any vaccine is available for Chandipura virus. In such a situation, the patient is given only supportive treatment in the hospital so that the problems caused by infection can be controlled. According to reports, the mortality rate due to this virus has been recorded at 56 to 75 percent, so carelessness can prove costly.

How can we protect ourselves?
This virus spreads through the bite of infected sandflies, so prevention is considered the most effective solution. According to Dr. Manju Kedarnath, children should wear full-sleeved clothes, use safe insect repellent according to their age and, if necessary, make them sleep in insecticide-treated mosquito nets. Apart from this, maintain cleanliness around the house, do not allow garbage to accumulate and keep such places clean where sandflies can breed.
