Chaitra Navratri 2026 Story in Hindi: The nine-day holy festival of Chaitra Navratri has started from today, Thursday, March 19, 2026, which will continue till March 27, 2026. Today, Chaitra Navratri will begin with the installation of the Kalash or Ghatasthapana and then for nine days the devotees will immerse themselves in the devotion of Mata Rani.
Different forms of Maa Darga are worshiped during the nine days of Navratri. Maa Shailputri Katha (Maa Shailputri Katha)
Mother Shailputri is the first form of Goddess Durga. According to legend, King Daksha once organized a grand yajna, inviting all the gods and sages, but did not invite his son-in-law Shiva and daughter Sati.
When Sati came to know about the Yagya, she became very eager to go to her father's house for the Yagya. Despite Shiva's persuasion, she did not agree and reached there alone. After reaching there, the father insulted Shiva a lot in front of everyone and spoke ill of him, due to which Sati felt very sad and she sacrificed her life in the fire pit of the Yagya.
When Shiva got the news of Sati's death, he became angry and started wandering here and there with Sati's dead body. Then to calm Shiva's anger, Lord Vishnu cut Sati's body into pieces with his Sudarshan Chakra. Wherever the part of Sati's body fell, it was called Shaktipeeth. Later Sati took rebirth in the house of Himalaya and became known as Mother Shailputri.
Maa Brahmacharini Katha (Maa Brahmacharini Katha)
According to the legend, Mother Brahmacharini was born to the mountain king Himalaya. Taking advice from Narad ji, she performed penance to get Shiva as her husband. Even before the penance, the goddess spent a thousand years eating only fruits and flowers, lived on the ground for a hundred years and survived on vegetables and continued her penance without worrying about rain or sun. For several thousand years she ate only broken Bilva leaves and continued worshiping Lord Shiva. In the end, she also stopped eating Bilvapatra and then started doing penance by remaining dehydrated and fasting. Due to the harsh penance of the goddess, her body had become emaciated. It was because of her rigorous penance that she got the name Brahmacharini. Seeing the harsh penance of the Goddess, the sages, sages and Siddhas told her that she will definitely get the fruits of her penance.
Maa Chandraghanta Katha
According to the legend, a demon named Mahishasura had usurped the throne of Devraj Indra and wanted his rule in heaven also. The gods became worried due to his terror. To solve the problem the gods sought help from the Trinity. Then, from the energy generated from the mouths of the three Gods, a goddess was born, who was called Goddess Chandraghanta. Shiva gave him the trident and Vishnu gave him the chakra. Similarly, all the gods also gave special weapons to the goddess. Then Mother Chandraghanta protected the gods by killing Mahishasura.
Maa Kushmanda Katha
According to the story, when the idea of creating the universe was conceived, there was darkness and silence in the universe. In such a situation, Trinity took help from Mother Durga. Mother Kushmanda, the fourth form of Mother Durga, created the universe. The smile on his face lit up the entire universe. Then from the glory of the Trinity, a goddess was born, who was born in the house of Maharishi Katyayan. Her name was Katyayani. Mother Katyayani killed Mahishasura on Dashami Tithi, hence she is called Mahishasura Mardani.

According to the story, when all the gods were troubled by the terror of Mahishasura, then the Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva) created Maa Siddhidatri with their might. It is also believed that Shiva did hard meditation of Maa Siddhidatri, due to which he attained eight Siddhis and half of Shiva's body became that of a goddess and he was called Ardhanarishwar.
