Mother Shailputri is the first form of Goddess Durga. According to legend, King Daksha once organized a grand yajna, inviting all the gods and sages, but did not invite his son-in-law Shiva and daughter Sati.

When Sati came to know about the Yagya, she became very eager to go to her father's house for the Yagya. Despite Shiva's persuasion, she did not agree and reached there alone. After reaching there, the father insulted Shiva a lot in front of everyone and spoke ill of him, due to which Sati felt very sad and she sacrificed her life in the fire pit of the Yagya.

When Shiva got the news of Sati's death, he became angry and started wandering here and there with Sati's dead body. Then to calm Shiva's anger, Lord Vishnu cut Sati's body into pieces with his Sudarshan Chakra. Wherever the part of Sati's body fell, it was called Shaktipeeth. Later Sati took rebirth in the house of Himalaya and became known as Mother Shailputri.
