Who was Vithabai Narayangaonkar?
According to a report published in India Today, Vithabai Bhau Mang Narayangaonkar was a very famous tamasha artiste, Lavani dancer and folk singer of Maharashtra, whom people fondly called ‘Tamasha Samragyi’ (Queen of Tamasha). Vithabai was born on 1 July 1935 in a poor Dalit artist family in Pandharpur, Maharashtra. His father Bhau Bapu Narayangaonkar himself ran a tamasha troupe.
Vithabai Narayangaonkar started dancing at a young age.
Vithabai started performing on stage at the age of just 10 without any training. She was very adept at singing and dancing folk songs like Lavani, Gavalan and Bhedik. In view of his brilliant art, he was honored with medals by the President of India in 1957 and 1990. Maharashtra Government started ‘Vithabai Narayangaonkar Lifetime Achievement Award’ in her memory in the year 2006. On January 15, 2002, Vithabai said goodbye to this world.
Gave birth to a child backstage
There is such an incident in the life of Vithabai Narayangaonkar, which surprised everyone. When she was 9 months pregnant, she started labor pain on stage during a live show. She immediately went backstage, gave birth to the child there and cut the umbilical cord with a stone. The surprising thing was that after some time she returned to the stage and started dancing again.
