Battery Lifespan Tips: The world is rapidly moving towards renewable energy like solar and wind, but a big problem of these energy sources is that they do not generate electricity all the time. Sometimes there is no sun, sometimes there is no wind, in such a situation it becomes very important to store electricity so that it can be used when needed. Lithium-ion batteries are most commonly used today, but they are expensive and sometimes pose a safety risk. For this reason, scientists are looking for such options which are cheap, safe and long lasting. In such a situation, scientists from Concordia University of Canada have found a very simple but effective solution to this problem. They added a very small amount of gold nanoparticles on the inner surface of the battery, so that the battery would last longer. So let us know which battery will last for years if you put a little gold in it.
If you put a little gold in which battery it will last for years
Zinc based batteries are considered a good option because the materials used in them are cheap and easily available, but they have a major drawback that they do not last long. Over time, small sharp metal structures, which are called dendrites, start forming inside these batteries. These dendrites keep growing slowly and eventually cause a short circuit inside the battery. Due to this the battery gets damaged. To overcome this problem, scientists from Concordia University of Canada have found an easy and effective method. They added a very small amount of gold nano particles on the inner surface of the battery, but did not cover the entire surface with gold, but spread very small gold particles lightly only on less than 10 percent area, which improved the performance of the battery.
How does this method work?
These gold particles change the way zinc solidifies inside the battery. Due to this, the formation of dendrites slows down considerably. Research found that in the batteries in which gold nanoparticles were inserted, the dendrites grew 50 times slower, which means that the deterioration of the battery started very late.

Big revelation from X-ray
Scientists used the powerful X-ray technology of the Canadian Light Source to understand this entire change. With the help of these fast X-rays, we could clearly see the changes happening at a very small level. This showed that even such small gold particles can have a big impact inside the battery. In lab tests, these new batteries worked for more than 6000 hours, which is much better than normal zinc batteries.
How expensive is this method?
Using gold may seem expensive, but a very small quantity of gold has been taken here. Therefore its cost is approximately 100 times less than traditional gold coating. Scientists are now trying to use this technology in other battery designs and new technologies such as sensors, solar panels and lighting systems.
