Amarnath Yatra started on 3rd July, but just 5 days later on 7th July, a picture of the natural ice Shivling has surfaced in which 90 percent of the Himlinga has melted.
The size of the sacred Shivling built in Amarnath has melted to one foot. Even before the disappearance of Himlinga, more than one lakh devotees had already had darshan of Baba Barfani in the holy cave. There is disappointment among the devotees after this picture surfaced.
Experts believe that due to rising temperature, global warming and presence of a large number of devotees in the cave, the possibility of rapid melting of Himling increases. However, the formation and melting of Himalinga is also considered a natural process.
This is not the first time, even before this, during the Yatra in 2013 and 2016, incidents of premature disappearance of Himalinga have come to light.
Despite the melting of Himlinga, Amarnath Yatra continues and devotees offer darshan and worship in the holy cave. The 57 day long Amarnath Yatra will conclude on Rakshabandhan on 28th August.
